Our History
St Teresa’s School began in 1930 when three Sisters of Mercy welcomed their first five pupils to a humble garage in Keyes Avenue, Rosebank. With no government support for Catholic schools at the time, the school operated privately and relied on careful management and the unwavering support of parents. Over the years, it grew steadily, expanding its facilities along Keyes Avenue to meet the needs of its community. Remarkably, St Teresa’s was one of the first schools in South Africa to defy Apartheid restrictions and admit students of all races, a proud testament to its values and courage.

The school has carried several names throughout its history, evolving from Rosebank Convent to St Teresa’s Convent, before uniting all three phases under today’s name, St Teresa’s School. We now cater for Grades 000 to 12, with Rosebuds Pre-Primary and the Junior Primary located on the Craighall Park campus, and the Senior Primary and High School sharing our beautiful Rosebank campus, the very road where the original five pupils were taught more than nine decades ago. While the world around us has transformed, St Teresa’s School has remained rooted in the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy. Mercy, Spirit and Excellence are our roots. Collaboration, Compassion and Global Responsibility are how those roots bear fruit. Together, these values shape the Heart of a Rosie, empowering every girl to lead with integrity, pursue excellence and make a meaningful difference in the world.

Our dedicated, qualified and caring staff guide each girl with professionalism and heart. The school is led collaboratively by the Sisters of Mercy, the Board of Governors and the School Management Team. Academically, St Teresa’s School consistently ranks among the top schools in Gauteng, with our Matrics writing the IEB Senior Certificate examinations. We are proud members of ISASA.

Today, 95 years on, St Teresa’s School stands as a leading independent Catholic girls’ school, rich in tradition and renowned for its commitment to holistic excellence. Every girl who passes through our doors becomes a Rosie, from our newly established Rosebuds Pre-Primary through the Junior Primary, Senior Primary, High School, PTA, Alumni and beyond, remaining part of the Rosie Sisterhood for life: Once a Rosie, always a Rosie.

The Sisters of Mercy & Mercy Education
Mercy Education has its origins in Ireland in the early 19th century, inspired by the vision and ministry of Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy. Catherine and her companions responded with courage and compassion to the needs of their time, particularly the needs of women and children who were most vulnerable. Their commitment to education, care and service laid the foundation for a global Mercy mission that continues today.

For more than 170 years, Mercy schools around the world have carried forward this legacy.
