Sports
Our school has a history of encouraging if not producing ourselves provincial and
national sportswoman. In the school at the moment we have a number of provincial
players in various sports. Sport at school is also regarded as part of the educational
programme, not only because it promotes physical fitness and fellowship, but because
it encourages the development of self control, co operation, loyalty, unselfishness,
determination, leadership and other character building qualities. Competition is
an important part of sport and there is nothing wrong with this as long as such
competition produces enjoyment and not bad feeling. The fact that sport is competitive
does not mean that it should lose recreational aspects.
We encourage ALL girls to participate in a sport regardless of the intensity of
participation and competition. It is for this reason our numbers in all sports have
increased. This helps coaches because they have a greater number of players in their
squads and on their sports ladders who receive the same professional coaching and
expertise that under normal circumstances only team members would be exposed to.
This will help improve the standard of sport at St Teresa’s Mercy School, and offer
the coaches depth in their sports instead of having one or two outstanding players.
When leisure time is equated with idleness, the result is always boredom. The neurotics
of society are seldom found among people who spend their non–working time in productive
activities or community service, so if leisure hours cannot be used for constructive
and self expressive occupations, let us play our part in encouraging sport as a
means of recreation.
Life is all about balance, a balance between body and mind.
We play the following sports competitively:
- Summer: swimming, diving, tennis, squash
- Winter: hockey, squash, netball
All girls in Grades 8-10 participate in Development Sport, where in addition to
the sports mentioned above, girls learn the skills for activities such as volleyball,
athletics, water-polo, orienteering, canoeing, soccer, softball, aerobics.
