Academic Programme

FOUNDATION PHASE

Our Foundation Phase offers a full range of subjects appropriate for the holistic development of our girls. Our developmental goals are achieved through a curriculum which is purposeful balanced and creative, using the OBE structures as our minimum requirements. Extension work is given to those pupils who achieve well with their central skills. Our curriculum includes Numeracy, Literacy, Religious Education, Life Skills, Physical Education and our second languages are Zulu and Afrikaans.

INTERMEDIATE PHASE

The Senior Primary phase encompasses Grades 4, 5 and 6. The girls study English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Mathematics, Natural Science, Human and Social Sciences, Life Orientation, Technology, Religious Education, Physical Education, Art, Drama and Music. Our academic approach is rooted in the outcomes-based philosophy, and coupled with the Mercy ethos of our school. Our girls are inspired to become well-rounded, compassionate and productive members of the larger community.

HIGH SCHOOL

We strive for academic excellence, and achieve it, but this is not the most important focus of our school. We recognize that each girl is a unique individual, and we aim to develop each one to be the best she can be.

Since January 2006 the Grade 7 learners have become part of the High School. The curricula for Grade 7, 8 and 9 are closely linked, and therefore the learners benefit from being taught by teacher specialists, who are also familiar with what is required at Grade 12 level. By merging Grade 7 with Grade 8 and 9, the academic difficulties often experienced by Grade 8 learners entering High School is greatly eased.

Grades 7, 8 and 9 follow a general course, the GET, taking the following subjects: English, Afrikaans, French, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, History and Geography (HSS), Arts and Culture, Economic Management Science, Technology, Life Orientation and Computer Studies.

From Grade 10, girls select subjects according to the National Curriculum Statement for the FET (Further Education and Training Certificate)

Religious Education is a very important part of our curriculum. Its aim is the development of the spiritual dimension of each girl.

Every year our school achieves a 100% pass rate in the final IEB exams, with many learners obtaining multiple distinctions.

Our school continues to offer the highest standard of quality teaching and learning. We have always stretched our learners to acquire the skills of teamwork, independent research, self knowledge, and critical thinking that will be their passport to a successful future.
